The Cambodian government is set to reduce exports of fishery products by 20 percent this year in order to cater for rising domestic demand, local media reported on Monday, citing industry officals.
Nao Thuk, director general of the Fishery Administration, said that this year Cambodia would export 24,000 tons of fishery products.
"We can catch a lot of fish, but our population has risen too. That was why we have to reduce exports of fishery products," Nao Thuk was quoted by the Phnom Penh Post as saying.
Representatives from the Fishery Administration declined to reveal the scale of domestic demand.
In March, the General Department of Fishery Administration reported that last year Cambodia exported 30,000 tons of fishery products, which included fish, lobster, sea crab and shrimp.
In 2008, only 5,000 tons were exported.

On 23, March, the minister of Ministry of Agriculture, Fishery and Floristries and others specialist department officer have monitored dry season rice and irrigation activities in Samdech Huh Sen 22 and 23 water pumping station and Mettapeap Cambodia and Korea 8 and met 100 family.
Two community members who live in Prash Sdech district got encouragement from the high class officer of Agriculture Ministry. Both communities was a Pur Las Sen Chei Agricultural Development community and Bopear Sen Chei community in Krang Svay commune, Presh Sdech distict. The minister- Chan Sarun has visited there in the middle of this week to monitor Pur Las water station.
Coordinators in Rice crop Research Center in Japan showed a purpose that they want to cooperate with MAFF and to test on Japanese rice seed to apply in Cambodia. Top officer of MAFF got this idea to consider.
