At the last weekend, Mr. Chan Sarun, the minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, visited Beung Ampel village Sdao commune , Ratanak Mondul district to monitor cotton rhythm production and to have a talk in a friendly way with people growing cotton.
In the meeting, minister Chan Sarun, the minister of Maff was very please with people who get a high yield in cotton growing. The minister expressed that, we are walking on the right way because this work is a part of poverty deduction in Cambodia based on the government policies that contains Samdach Decho Hun Sen as the prime minister.
Notified that cotton is a kind of crop that grows for along time ago in Cambodia which our farmer always crop in the purpose of getting fiberscope. Before 1979 cotton is grown in some provinces such as Kandal, Kratie, Battam Bong, and Kampong Cham. Unfortunately , because of war and market issue, the land used cotton was changed to crop corn, bean, and potato instead.
Nowadays, Cotton Industry is in performing again. Recently, Sela Damex Company invested in the construction of cotton invention factory in Sdao commune (ឃុំស្តៅ), Ratanak Mondul district. It is about 28 km form Battambong city which have capacity to produce cotton 15 ton per day and absorb cotton 5.475 ton per year. Today, Sela Damex is a company which established in 2006 with 106 ha square includes 5 ha for factory, Sela Damex had a contracted to buy cotton from the resident in the price of $400/ ton.
In that change, the minister of MAFF has recommand this company to ensure on the seed monitoring; especially, the importing of seed called “GMO”. Furthermore, the minister encouraged people and company to have accurate contract on the cotton growing.
