Introduction

Following on from more than a decade of foundation activity and development that has been supported by national and international investment, CARDI is now entering a new phase. It is uniquely positioned to offer leadership and innovation in the application of agricultural research and development is the springboard to a vibrant and economically successful agricultural sector. Most importantly the research agenda must be to meet the development needs of the Cambodia and its people.

The Cambodian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) was established by sub-decree 74 in August 1999. It is a legal entity under the management of a Director who reports to a government appointed Board of Directors. It is autonomous in relation to its personnel, physical and financial management but is subject to technical and budget approval by the Ministry of Economics and Finance.

CARDI's creation has evolved from the government purchase of 70 hectares of land in Sangkat Prateah Lang, Khan Dangkor, Phnom Penh. CARDI became operational at the beginning of 2000. It has a professional staff of 52, including some staffs who are completing post-graduate training abroad.

CARDI is a semi-autonomous institution working with its stakeholder to improve the living standards of all Cambodians, especially farmers, through agricultural research, training and technology transfer. Under its motto “Technology for Prosperity”, CARDI's goal is to increase agricultural productivity through human resource and institutional development of sustainable agricultural technologies appropriate for Cambodian conditions.

CARDI, in collaboration with international organizations, UN agencies, the International Rice Research Institute and other bi-lateral and multi-lateral aid programs and NGO's, continues in the footsteps of the Cambodia-IRRI-Australia Project (CIAP) to work on a number of fronts to help advance Cambodian agricultural practices.

CARDI is a multi-disciplinary agricultural research institute, focusing not only on rice crop but also on other enterprises that help much contribution to rice-based farming system production. It has the following tasks:

  1. Manage and lead all agricultural research activities to enhance agricultural development,
  2. Conduct agricultural research and transfer technologies, including agricultural economics;
  3. Deliver services to support the implementation and rehabilitation of agricultural development projects,
  4. Develop human resources for agricultural fields and,
  5. Cooperate with relevant national and international agricultural research institutions.

Major Activities:

A commitment to excellence, scientific integrity, accountability, innovation and creativity has ensured that efforts in the following disciplines have contributed to enormous improvement in agriculture:

Plant Breeding Program
To develop high yielding potential with premium quality crop varieties through research and utilization of available genetic resources in lowland, irrigated and upland farming systems of Cambodia.


 

 

Soil and Water Sciences Program
To develop cost effective, simple and reliable nutrient management systems to help farmers increase and stabilize crop yields in lowland, irrigated and upland farming systems through improving knowledge of soils and water quality.

 

 

 



 

Plant Protection Program
To develop technologies and strategies that will assist growers to increase yields and profit by protecting agricultural crop losses from pests in a safe and sustainable manner.

 

 

 

 


 

Agronomy and Farming Systems Program
To improve the living standards of Cambodians, especially farmers through crop diversification, aquaculture, and animal husbandry.


 

 

 

Agricultural Engineering Program
To improve the efficiency, quality and sustainability of crop production in lowland, irrigated and upland farming systems by researching, developing and extending appropriate technologies related to tools, equipment and means of production.


 

 

Socio-Economics Program
To enhance the quality of agricultural research and development to meet the requirement of stakeholders especially farmers by facilitating in research design, implementation and evaluation and at the same time, gender and marketing perspective were strongly incorporated into the research program.


 

 

Training and Information Center
To develop human resources of good knowledge and skills for serving in Cambodian agriculture productivity through training, library and public awareness.

 

 

 

Planning and Collaboration and Business Office
To support CARDI as a public sustainable national research and development institution and as the preferred Cambodian supplier of agricultural research and development services.
