IFReDI Catch Assessment Survey 2021-2023

The Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute (IFReDI), with technical assistance from FAO CAPFISH project under EU budget support, implemented a scientific catch assessment survey (CAS) from 2021-2023, using monthly household recall interviews. The aim was to obtain better information on catch and effort by small-scale fishing households in Cambodia, and to develop approaches to improve fisheries monitoring and submission of statistical capture fisheries data, by provincial fisheries administrations, supported by IFReDI.

The survey includes a one-time Household Selection Interview (HSI) to randomly select participating households and collect data on the fisheries dependence and proportion of fishing households, and the Household Catch Interview (HCI), that uses a recall methodology where respondents are interviewed monthly, to collect data on species catch, effort, involvement by gender and disposal of the catch (including value).

All data is collected digitally in the field, using survey forms developed in Kobo Toolbox. In order to facilitate access to the data and preparation of reports by fisheries staff, all available data collected in the surveys is included in an on-line database.

The survey is a baseline of the state of the fisheries for small-scale freshwater household fisheries in Cambodia, including a fisheries dependency assessment. The findings also are used to evaluate and supplement estimates, currently produced by province level reporting-based catch assessment.
